About the House
74 Emerald Hill, or ‘Library House’ as it is named, is part home, part institution. This spectacular yet unassuming home sits handsomely at the end of Emerald Hill; with its stunning shophouse exterior matched by a vast interior steeped in heritage, spectacular form, and tasteful placemaking. Named after its owners penchant for literature, Library House is an index of Emerald Hill’s architectural history, capturing the zeitgeist of the many chapters of its past within its layout and form. Library House is built in a Second Transitional Shophouse Style, with all the features of these shophouses from yesteryear. At its entrance you are greeted by it’s timber pintu pagar (gate) that opens to an airy five-foot way leading to the corner of Emerald Hill. The roof is ornamented with unmissable green glazed ceramic bamboo mullions that sit right underneath full length jalousie windows on the second floor, which are crowned with Malay-style tracery ventilation holes.
Designed by Johannes Bartholomew (Birch) Westerhout in 1916, Library House had renovation works done between 1991-1992, and included the addition of a new rear extension which earned the Good Effort Award in 1994, the precursor of today’s esteemed Architectural Heritage Awards. Library House is the first shophouse to receive this award. Since 1989, Library House, along with the other shophouses on this postcard stretch, has been gazetted as part of the Orchard Road conservation area. Due to its premium location as a corner terrace home, it boasts a floor size approximately 1.5 times that of its neighbours.
Within the home, you are greeted by its immaculate composition – its high ceilings and full length wood-frame windows let in natural light that bounces off its granite floors into an open-plan kitchen, dining and living room. The space transfixes you towards contemplation, mirroring its measured and intentional design. Library House is true to its own bibliography, as the planning and materiality of the home equally pays homage to features of yesteryear while carrying it into modern form – from its unique shophouse features to its specifically sourced wooden rafters that run staccato across its ceiling, elongating the entire space. As you move through the first floor, you experience the vastness of the home as there are multiple perches and vantage points each offering a remarkable perspective of the home. For those who prefer smaller nooks, the bar counter at the atrium provides a picturesque perch as you sit overlooking a 30-year old bonsai plant that was crane-lifted into Library House. At the end of the first floor, a flight of magnificent dark wood stairs lead you down to a laundry area and a studio room, or up to four additional finely furnished studio rooms – including a spectacular attic studio.
In line with the current owner’s fascination with books, the studios in Library House are named after renowned authors. At the basement you will find Rushdie Studio, which has it’s own private access. Upstairs is Morrison, Hoffman, Murakami, and Marquez Studios, while sitting on the top floor with beautiful natural skylight ceilings is Calvino Studio. Each room has its own ensuite bathrooms and a kitchenette, offering privacy for each of its occupants – however each room is unique in its configuration and how it interplays with the context of the larger home and Emerald Hill.
About the Neighbourhood
About Emerald Hill, it is a tranquil residential oasis just off of downtown and Orchard Road. 313 Somerset, library@orchard, and access to Somerset MRT are just some of the perks of living on this historic street that was a nutmeg plantation in the pre-1900s. Finding a home along Emerald Hill is finding a sanctuary. Library House is refined, yet to be defined and it invites you to chronicle its next chapter as part of Singapore’s larger architectural heritage and history.
