About the House

Botany House is a two-storey shophouse built in the late 1930s. Belonging to the second transitional shophouse style, the elegant black-and-white facade boasts intricate plaster ornamentation, windows with Malay-style tracery, and a small gated front yard.

The interior of the house has been renewed for contemporary living while also retaining many of its original features. Rustic-looking Chinese talismanic floor tiles span the interior of the house from wall to wall. Intricate fretwork adorns the hand-carved lintels of each doorway and the stairwell bannisters. Chinese green jade breezeway tile blocks peep out from the walls between rooms. In the expansive kitchen, the eye-catching traditional red brick counters provide ample space for both cooking and entertaining. The naturally-lit kitchen courtyard is also home to one of the last few surviving functioning wells in Singapore.

The house was named Botany House to promote reflection on the physical and natural history of the neighbourhood of River Valley. The area was generally populated by jungle and marsh before the 19th century. After British colonisation, some of the land was converted to gambier plantations, then nutmeg plantations, which were later bought over by Jewish and subsequently Chinese businessmen. The surrounding area near the Singapore River was also home to members of the Orang Laut and Malay communities. As one of the most exclusive houses in Figment’s portfolio, Botany House contains two spacious and self-sufficient studios, and is also slated to house original botanical-themed art by outstanding artists and creators.

A popular haunt for cafe-hopping, some of our favourite brunch spots include Common Man Coffee Roasters, Craftsmen Specialty Coffee, and The Book Cafe. Interesting places you can only find in this neighbourhood include the Russian Supermarket where Eastern European fare are stocked, STPI Creative Workshop & Gallery for your contemporary art fix, and Crane, a member’s club that hosts co-working spaces and community activities.

Not so much – this is Figment’s vision of shared housing for grown-ups – that’s mature working professionals. We aren’t here to slice and dice apartments into matchboxes just to stuff as many ‘tenants’ as possible into a building, adult-dorm style. With Figment you always have room to breathe.

You can socialize as much as you want to, but you also reserve the option to retreat to the quiet comfort of your private studio within a spacious 3000ft² shophouse.

How many people are allowed to move into one studio?

We have a maximum occupancy of 2 pax per studio.

What is included in the rental rate?

You get a fully-furnished studio that’s move-in ready. WiFi, utilities, and weekly cleaning of the common areas are all included. To get you started, we’ll provide one complimentary set of bedding and towels, plus some basic household essentials. Of course, your rent includes the use of shared laundry and kitchen facilities, along with common areas for living and dining. You will also enjoy complimentary access to our members-only ‘living-room-away-from-home’, Figment Club House.

Are there any house rules?

We have a common set of house rules (such as quiet hours) across our homes, which all members are expected to agree and adhere to before their stay.

What are your payment methods?

We accept payment by local / overseas bank transfer, PayNow or credit card (processed by Stripe; note that 4% fees apply)

Do you require a security deposit?

Yes, we require a security deposit of 1.5 month’s rent before the commencement of your stay to secure your booking. This security deposit will be refunded within 30 days from the end of your stay.
