Living in Joo Chiat: Inside a Figment Neighbourhood Home
Joo Chiat does not announce itself loudly. Instead, it reveals itself slowly. Colour appears in layers. History lives beside routine. Culture sits inside the everyday.
Because of this, Joo Chiat rewards those who pay attention.
At Figment, we design homes for exactly this kind of place. We believe neighbourhood shapes the way people live. Therefore, we build homes that respond to their surroundings. In Joo Chiat, that means embracing memory, craft, and street-level life.

A Neighbourhood Shaped by Culture
Joo Chiat grew from the edge of the sea. Over time, fishermen, traders, and Peranakan families shaped its identity. As a result, the area developed a rhythm that still holds today.
Low-rise shophouses line the streets. Cafés sit next to long-standing eateries. Homes share space with daily commerce. Meanwhile, colour and ornament soften the urban pace.
Because Joo Chiat never became anonymous, it still feels personal. People walk. They greet shop owners. They return to the same coffee spots. Consequently, living here feels grounded rather than transient.

Figment’s Approach to Joo Chiat Living
Figment does not treat Joo Chiat as a backdrop. Instead, we treat it as a collaborator.
Before design begins, we study the street. We observe movement, sound, and light. Then, we allow those details to guide the home. In turn, each Figment property becomes a response to place rather than a fixed template.
We preserve the architectural language of the shophouse. At the same time, we introduce modern comfort with restraint. Clean lines, curated furniture, and local artworks sit quietly within the original structure. As a result, the home feels intentional without feeling imposed.
Obor-Obor House: A Home Rooted in Coastal Memory
In Joo Chiat, Obor-Obor House reflects the area’s relationship with the sea. Named after the Malay word for jellyfish, the home draws inspiration from Joo Chiat’s fishing past and coastal light.
The interior follows a calm and rhythmic palette. Colours echo water, sand, and sky. Meanwhile, custom artworks reference nets, shells, wood, and fabric once used by local fishermen. These details anchor the home in memory.
Rooms take their names from stone, shell, and wave. This simple system helps residents feel oriented. More importantly, it reinforces a connection to natural elements that shaped the neighbourhood.
Each studio remains self-contained. Residents enjoy privacy, in-room laundry, and fast Wi-Fi. However, the design never feels sealed off. An outdoor patio offers a quiet pause, while the street below continues its gentle flow.
Living With the Neighbourhood, Not Above It
Life in Joo Chiat happens at street level. Because of this, Figment homes stay close to daily routines.
Step outside, and cafés appear within minutes. Local grocers sit nearby. East Coast Park lies within walking distance. Meanwhile, buses and MRT connections keep the city close.
As a result, residents move easily between home and neighbourhood. They develop habits. They recognise faces. Over time, the area feels familiar rather than temporary.
Flexible leases allow people to arrive without pressure. However, the sense of belonging forms quickly. This happens because the neighbourhood does the welcoming.

A Way of Living, Grounded in Joo Chiat
Ultimately, Figment believes that home begins with neighbourhood. In Joo Chiat, that belief feels natural.
Living in a Figment home here means waking up inside an existing rhythm. It means recognising the street, the light, and the pace of daily life. Above all, it means feeling connected to place.
Figment does not offer an escape from the city. Instead, we offer a way to live deeply within it—starting with Joo Chiat.
